“Your walk, your pace”

The key factor in planning your walk is your preferred daily distance. You can take as long as you want to walk the South Downs Way – it all comes down to a combination of the time you have available, your fitness, what pace you enjoy walking at, if you want to look at and do other things along the way and the weather conditions!

We would suggest spending no longer than ten days, or maybe breaking it in two if you do want to do it at a more leisurely pace –  do a five day walk and then come back for another five day walk a month or two later when you’re ready to continue.

For people who are really fast and fit, a four or five day pace is quite achievable but make sure you have done plenty of walking in the boots you are going to wear!

Many people like to walk about fifteen miles per day on the South Downs Way, which means completing the whole trail in somewhere between six and seven days.  Available accommodation will dictate the exact mileage per day, but this will act as a rough guide. Breaking the days up by exact matching distances isn’t possible as getting to the best places to stay may mean slightly shorter or slightly further on any given day
